Who was Nellie Payne?

The Alan Field Payne Memorial Scholarship Board (not carved), at Hutchins School, Hobart, Tasmania, features the joystick from his Sopwith Pup fighter plane.  It was presented to the school in 1977 by Madge Payne.  It is currently housed in the school’s Auditorium.
The propeller currently hangs in the Hutchins Museum.  It was presented to the school in 1933 by Nellie.

“The plane referred to was the training aircraft which Alan had used continuously while training air cadets at the R.A.F. station at Minchinhampton, in Gloucestershire, in 1917-8. It was an Avro training plane with a 130hp Clerget engine, of a type commonly used at that time for training purposes.  Alan had become attached to it, and had managed to obtain possession of its propeller after the Armistice.”
