“Ellen Nora Payne – Woodcarver of Tasmania” by Russell Atkinson – page 72

“One of the most exquisitely wrought memorial pieces is a lectern in St John’s Church, Franklin in Tasmania’s Huon District.  It was carved in 1918 in memory of Phillip Douglas Davis of the 12 Battalion, A.I.F., son of a former bank manager of Westbury.  He had died on active service.

The design of the lectern is noteworthy.  From an octagonal base and an intricately carved foot rises a tapering column with two carved bands, and the head of the lectern bears, carved into the polished blackwood, several significant devices and the motto “in Deo confides”
He was twenty when he died.
