Who was Nellie Payne?

Nellie's passing. 31st January 1962.

DB164

Nellie’s last few years were spent quietly at Antill Street, lovingly cared for by daughter Madge, and enjoying always the company of old friends who called upon her from time to time.  And when the weather was warm she would go for short walks on the arm of a companion.  Son Geoffrey and his wife Gladys lived nearby with their two unmarried daughters, Phyllis and Rosemary, and Nellie’s other two grandchildren Geoffrey and Elizabeth were already married bringing great grandchildren to visit Nellie.  It was in these later years that Nellie’s pleasure in young people proved a great benefit to her for she delighted in her younger family members, relations and friends.

She is lovingly remembered by many as “Granny Payne”.

She was privately cremated and her ashes brought back to join her beloved family members in the Westbury cemetery, not far from where it all began at “Westfield”.
