1900 
AprilDuke of Tek dies – family return to Melbourne then Dr. Payne returns to London and Nellie and children visit family in Launceston.
1901Nellie and children rejoin Dr Payne in London .
 Nellie enrolled South Kensington School of Art London UK, Goldsmith College, University of London.
 Family resides in ‘St. Brelades’ ,Lee, Kent, England.
 England  friends – Henry Handel ‘Ethel’ Richardson and Prof J G Robertson – Professor of German Literature at University of London.
 England  friend – Mr Edward David Dobbie who is the Tasmanian Solicitor-General.
1902Nellie’s mother, Elizabeth Field, dies.  Nellie is joined in London by her 2 sisters – Ethel who studies with Nellie, and Louie who does the home duties for Nellie.
1903Nellie carves oak music stool for St Michael’s Collegiate School, Hobart, DB167.
 Nellie carves oak settle carved with ivy and crest for Mrs Griffith, DB132.

1905 
4th MayNellie carves St Andrews Church – pulpit dedicated in Westbury Tasmania, DB1.
1906 
24th JanuaryST. ANDREW’S CHURCH, WESTBURY.
The annual meeting of the parishioners or St. Andrew’s Church (Anglican) was held in the Sunday-schoolroom on Monday evening………………….
During the past year the handsome oak pulpit which has designed and executed by Mrs. Payne (formerly Miss Field, of Westfield) in England, and donated in memory of the late Hon. T. W. Field and Mrs. Field by members of the family, was also erected in the church.

 Nellie completes a four panel screen in London, DB73.
Nellie makes oak screen embroidered panels, leather on reverse, arras cloth lower panels. Panel representing the seasons – on blue satin, Spring – purple crocus, Summer – Briar Rose, Autumn – Blackberry, Winter – Mistletoe. Leather panels, brown and orange dyed and embossed, carved head piece.
 Nellie holidays in Tasmania with son Alan to avoid the English winter.
 Nellie carves Litany desk for St Andrew’s Church Westbury Tasmania – executed in fumed oak. DB3.

1907 
8th AprilNellie presents a prayer desk to St Andrews Church Westbury, DB3.
20th SeptemberNellie submits China Cabinet to the Launceston Women’s Work Exhibition, DB67.
 WOMEN’S WORK EXHIBITION IN LAUNCESTON.
A SPLENDID DISPLAY.
The exhibition of women’s work in connection – with the Australian Women’s Exhibition was opened in the Albert Hall yesterday afternoon.

 Miss Payne, Westbury, showed a carved china cupboard, which is a work of art.

23rd OctoberNellie carves China cupboard in Blackwood for first Australian Exhibition of Women’s work opened October 23rd 1907, Melbourne. Wrought iron hinges, motto ‘safe bind, safe find’ belongs to R C Field Esq (Nellie’s brother) ‘Westfield’, Westbury, Tasmania, DB67.
 Nellie awarded numerous prizes – Sir Gerald Strickland Prize for carved cabinet, Lady Bedford’s Prize, Mrs Marg Buckley’s Prize and a silver medal.
 Nellie returned back to England with son Alan.
1908/9 The Payne family return to Tasmania and reside in Elizabeth St, Hobart.  Some of their friends are Dick Dobbie (Police Magistrate of Hobart), Sir Lindesay Clark (Head of Western Mining Corp) and Charles Wolfhagen (Head of Legal firm).
1909Nellie carves her own bedhead and footer, DB204.
 Nellie receives ‘testimonial’ from Amor Fenn – Design Master.
25th JulyNellie asked to judge the carving fretwork, repousse, metalwork, leatherwork, china etc at the Northern Tasmanian Arts and Crafts Society Exhibition at Launceston.
9th SeptemberNellie is announced as ‘judge of carvers’ at the Launceston Arts and Crafts Society Show.
23rd SeptemberNellie exhibits carved wooden over-mantle and four panel screen at Launceston Arts and Crafts Society Annual Show.
 Nellie judges ‘carving, fretwork, repousse, metal, leather work, china etc.’ at Launceston Arts and Craft Society Show in Hobart Town Hall.
12th OctoberNellie exhibits ‘non-competition’ woodcarving in Arts and Crafts Society’s Annual Exhibition .
1910 
6th MayNellie and Dr Payne give a ‘small dance’ at their home in Hobart.
 Nellie carves 1st dower chests for Ella Mary Field – John Charles Field’s daughter (first niece to marry – Fredrick William Ratten). Japanese oak, iron hinges and handles, DB91 .
 Nellie makes fire screen, Blackwood frame, green leather panel, belonging to R C Field Esq (Nellie’s brother), DB169.
23rd SeptemberNellie exhibited some fine samples of woodcarving, comprising a variety of panels and a beautifully worked screen with an embossed leather centre at Arts and Crafts Quarterly Exhibition in Hobart.

1911 
3rd MayNellie  judges and exhibits ‘non-competition’ woodcarving (Blackwood fire screen, oak writing case and a leather-worked writing pad) in Northern Tasmanian Arts and Crafts Society Annual exhibition.
14th JulyNellie is thanked for arranging the Hobart Arts and Crafts Society members’ work to be exhibited in Northern Tasmanian Arts and Crafts Society’s Annual Exhibition in May.
 Nellie carves a leather address cover for Canon Shoobridge, DB122.
1912 
12th NovemberNellie exhibits ‘Australian motif overmantel and a wooden curb mounted in copper’ and ‘leatherwork’ at the Arts and Crafts Society of Northern Tasmanian Annual Exhibition.
 Nellie invited to take tea with Tasmanian Governor (Sir Harry Barron) at the Arts and Crafts Society of Northern Tasmanian Annual Exhibition.
 Nellie is a judge at the Arts and Crafts Society of Northern Tasmanian Annual Exhibition and displays a ‘drawing of a design of a chair with Australian motifs’.
 Nellie carves chair which is presented by Geoffrey Payne to his old school, Felsted, Essex. Made of Blue-gum 60 years old, back panel and seat of Stringy Bark. School coat of arms and Australian gum leaves and seeds, also Kookaburra or Laughing Jackass, DB65.
